Robust Power.

There is a form of “robustness” inherent in AC power generated by rotating electro-magnetic fields (spinning generators). Those magnetic fields are a form of very short-term power storage that can fluctuate in reaction to changing loads. This is one form of reactive power or VAR (Volts-Amps-Reactive). VAR provides a level of stability to the power and adds a component of muscle to the power which enhances its transportability across distances.

In recent years, we have been highly aware of the impact we have on the world around us, and, just as importantly, the impact on our wallet. Part of understanding the impact we have on both of these things, is understanding in what ways we use energy. If we can identify what ways we use energy, we are closer to knowing the ways we waste energy.

I like to talk about power quality and energy management. It seems that I'm often harping on the hidden effects of all of the newer electronic components in lighting, motor controllers, controllers, computers, etc.

In my reading, I found this blog on power quality. It focuses on some of the issues with energy efficiency technologies.

I thought you might enjoy seeing someone else's perspectives for a change.

Make sure you read the comments as that is where the real gems are found.

In my last post, I promised to take a closer look at the measures you should take to minimize your demand charges where solar is providing a significant portion of the power consumed, but I need to start by explaining one of the problems created by introducing solar into your system.

Shaft bearing failures in industrial electric motors can be caused by a variety of problems. For example, it is natural to think of excessive side forces when belts or chains are improperly adjusted, environmental heat, dust, or corrosives, or improper lubrication.
